In preparation for this blog, I purchased a domain from GoDaddy. It is quite straightforward to configure the custom domain for a web app on Azure by following instructions from here. However I got the following error when navigating to the custom domain.
I thought maybe that it takes some time for the DNS cache to update so I decided to wait. I tried again a day later but I still received the same error. I then used an online DNS lookup to check what IP address the custom domain resolves to and it resolved to the correct IP address in Azure. I also checked the default Azure web app URL, i.e mywebapp.azurewebsites.net, and it too resolved to the same IP address.
After a bit of research, some people suggested that this happens when you switch from Basic, Shared, Standard or Premium plan to Free. This is because Free service plan does not support custom domain. However, my web app service plan is Shared which supports custom domain so it was really odd. I then thought maybe I switch to Standard plan and then back to Shared to see if that does anything. This somehow fixed the issue and I no longer get the error. I’m guessing this might be a glitch in Azure or something. Hope to see if anyone knows why this fixed the issue in the comments.
Also, while configuring the custom domain in the new Azure portal, I noticed that the IP address to use when adding an A record with my DNS provider sometimes just disappeared. I had to find this IP address from the old portal.
Thought this was interesting for my first blog post. Hope this might help someone with the same issue when configuring custom domain on Azure for their web app. Have a nice day.
